The "recyclable" is not magical, let's take action for our Cancún

It is becoming increasingly popular to "be green”. Every day more and more people claim to be committed to the environment and try to take actions that benefit nature -- or at least that don’t affect it too much.
We've all heard the words "reduce, reuse and recycle" as the magic words that will "save the world". We buy products and begin to check if the packaging bears the famous recycling symbol and then we feel very green.

But the "great ecological actions" often end there. An overwhelming percentage of the waste we generate every day ends up stacked in giant landfills as in the one in Cancún.

We need to make something very clear: the fact that a product or its packaging bears the "recyclable" logo does not mean that recycling is spontaneous or carried out without the concrete actions of human beings that must separate and discard (or deliver) it in the right place.

It is not magic!

During electoral times we suffer with terrible visual pollution in what appears to be a "Banners War". Undoubtedly, as a citizen I applaud the politicians and government officials who have passed a law that "makes it mandatory" for the electoral material to be "recyclable".

Yes, the banners claim to be "recyclable" but that does not guarantee that they will be recycled. Many end up ruined and unusable and even worse, lying on the ground while covering the sewers along with plenty more "recyclable" waste. And then we are all suffering from the floods that are so common in Cancún.

Beyond a doubt, we enjoy the great privilege of living in one of the most beautiful places in the world. We are blessed with a natural environment, which is extremely rich in animal and plant species that make the Mexican Caribbean a true paradise. Mother Nature is noble and generous, but not infallible, at least not when faced with indifference and human predation.

Do you know that thousands of volunteers remove tons of trash during each beach cleaning that is organized here in Cancun?

I wonder how the local animals feel about the fact that we don’t properly discard what is no longer useful to us.

I would like to know if our "junk" is of any use to the wonderful sea turtles that nest on our shores between May and September?

How does so much garbage coming from many countries end up in protected areas such as the Biosphere Reserve of Sian Ka'an?

The following photographs from Love Cancun were taken in the heart of the downtown area and in the Hotel Zone by Cancún locals just like you and me... How amazing, right?

We thought we heard a "tick tock, tick tock" under a wooden bridge in a restaurant in the Hotel Zone where this gorgeous alligator came to visit. Photo taken with a cell phone by Indra Rojo Chapman.

A "knock, knock, knock, knock" on the street in SM 15 made me turn around and came across this beautiful woodpecker happily feeding off a fallen log. Photo also taken with a cell phone by Indra Rojo Chapman.
